Strategic Consulting Options
- Creation of Practical National Medical Laboratory Standards
In order to have effective large-scale national standards, there are many considerations that must be analyzed, balanced, and merged, as depicted in the diagram to the right, including:
-
Rigorous world-class standards
-
Practical, culturally-appropriate & realistic step-wise modifications
-
Credible to the country’s citizens & the international community
The team at OneWorld-Lab has years of experience in standards creation, based on international best practices, such as those from U.S. CLIA, ISO-15189 (www.iso.org), AABB and others. OneWorld-Lab brings a unique balance to standards creation because of its holistic experience that includes hands-on large-scale implementation.
- Infrastructure Assessment, Planning and Improvement
In order to improve quality, service and capacity, a complete understanding of the competencies, capabilities, obligations and needs of a country’s lab infrastructure must be known. However, the process of obtaining holistic and useful research on these important areas, and an intelligent, actionable plan of improvement, can be difficult to scope and implement. OneWorld-Lab offers comprehensive infrastructure analysis projects including the performance of the following strategic consulting services:
-
Investigate Current State
Gather detailed information on the current services, facilities, equipment, personnel, capacity and needs of all laboratory operations within medical college facilities in the State. In addition, gather similar information on feeder laboratories & referral laboratories
- Determine “Benchmark” Standardized Laboratory (all aspects)
Create a facility and operations template to standardize lab capabilities that:
- Uses global best practices balanced by practical realities
- Is based on lab size, lab complexity and lab capability
- Seeks to cover the critical needs of clinicians/patients served
- Perform Gap Analysis (Current State vs Benchmark)
Assess the gap between the current state of laboratory capabilities the benchmark prototypical facility through:
- Onsite assessments
- Feedback from lab management and personnel
- Comparison and analysis to benchmark facility
- Create Prioritized Plan of Required Improvement
Create a time-based, fiscally-intelligent plan for laboratory improvement that covers the following areas of laboratory need, and the fiscal reality of the client:
- Equipment & Supplies
- Pre and Post-Analytics
- Internal QC and external QC/QA
- Refrigeration, UPS, A/C
- Automated & Non-Automated Equipment
- Other Supplies, Materials, Kits and Reagents
- Maintenance & Annual Maintenance Contracts
- Training and Personnel Competency
- Facilities
- Capacity
- Negotiate Reduced-Price Diagnostic Equipment & Supplies
Assist client with volume-based price and minimum order quantity negotiations with Diagnostic equipment and supplies companies. OneWorld-Lab seeks to leverage a large lab client base across multiple countries to assist those same countries with better pricing and access to industry suppliers.
- Engage with Client to Seek and Secure Temporary Foreign Aid
Although OneWorld-Lab sets up its pricing structure to be affordable, and strives to clearly deliver the best service value and broadest available solution to clients, there are usually other expenditures that must be considered. In many cases, these expenditures (e.g. facility upgrades, equipment purchases, quality control materials, etc.) can be quite significant when required by thousands of laboratories. The extended OneWorld-Lab team has experience with writing, articulating and securing grant and other funding proposals for temporary foreign aid – including experience with, and contacts or connections to, most of the following organizations: The Soros Foundations, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Clinton Global Initiative, Unicef, USAID, World Bank, and the IMF.
Education, E-Learning & Training
The cornerstone of the OneWorld-Lab model is education – without educational help, improvement becomes unlikely, even unattainable. As discussed in the Country Solutions section, the Company’s country-wide options include the fundamentally important educational components.
For clients that are unable to directly pursue such a path, OneWorld-Lab can create & implement custom educational solutions based on the best-practices used in other countries – and using industry-expert instructors from the OneWorld-Lab team and our network of affiliate partners. All of these options can enable labs and their staff to meet continuing education and licensing requirements, within a timeframe and location that fits client needs.
The diagram (at right) depicts the basic educational philosophy that underpins the training options of OneWorld-Lab – by highlighting the importance of, & interplay between, the laboratory’s “path of workflow” and the “quality system essentials” that each lab director must employ to ensure the lab produces the desired test quality. Note: the “quality system essentials” model as developed by CLSI (NCCLS) was originally discussed in its document: “ A Quality System Model for Health Care (GP26-A2)” and uses 12 essentials, based on the 20 quality system elements in ISO 9001. Basic educational options include:
- Instructor-Led Classroom Training and Education
OneWorld-Lab has instructor-led classroom training (of varying lengths and design) and continuing education options in many categories, including the following:
- Accreditation process training
- Laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Basics of quality assurance & quality control
- Rapid testing, simple microscopic procedures, and non-instrumented point of care testing
- Laboratory director training
- Customizable topics
- Symposia, Seminars & Conferences
These hybrid learning opportunities can be designed to bring together professionals from every area of laboratory medicine. OW’s symposia can provide the healthcare community of a country with the opportunity to meet continuing education, certification, and licensing requirements while interacting with, and learning from, other professionals in the clinical laboratory field. There are many standard and custom options that can be discussed.
OneWorld-Lab symposia promote ongoing development in healthcare quality systems and lab accreditation. They can offer attendees the opportunity to learn about and discuss important industry issues, and earn continuing education credits.
- E-Learning Options
Soon, OneWorld-Lab will have an extensive library of educational tools designed to significantly improve lab performance. The online courses will provide educational guides, procedural training, and advice on standards implementation to physicians, medical technologists, and laboratory staff. OneWorld-Lab’s E-learning “LabUniversity” will give immediate access to the best online clinical laboratory education at a time and location, convenient to the user.
LabUniversity™ is a distance learning program that was developed in response to the learning needs of physicians and laboratory staff to obtain convenient laboratory training that will meet certification and licensing requirements. It is an educational resource that can be used anytime, anywhere, via the internet. Modules operate in accordance with ISO-based quality management programs. Lessons are designed to take between 20 and 30 minutes to complete. Each course will include examples drawn from current laboratory practices, enabling personnel to gain tangible knowledge that can be immediately applied in the laboratory. LabU™ will provide the flexibility for users to purchase individual courses or courses packaged together. LabUniversity ™ and LabU™ are trademarks of COLA, Inc. (www.cola.org).
OneWorld-Lab’s e-learning services will also help you stay compliant with regulations and/or operate in accordance with ISO-based quality systems. The Company can work with your local credentialing agency and continuing education programs regarding credit availability.
Laboratory accreditation, assessments & pre-assessments
At its core, OneWorld-Lab is a large-scale quality education and quality standards-based accreditation company. As such, the company offers accreditation and assessment services that take advantage of the Company’s educational model and operationally efficient process. These services can be secured by labs, lab groups, and larger lab communities – subject to geographic restrictions and other guidelines.
Patient-Outcomes Measurement –The Mission “Yardstick”
The Company measures its success in two important ways: a) its revenue growth and profitability, and b) its causal contri bution to better patient outcomes. To that end, the Company is measuring its direct impact on medical laboratory outcomes and in turn its indirect contribution to patient care as depicted in the diagram to the right.
